How Do I Start My Transformation ?

It's pretty funny having people come up to me and recognizing me.  But what I notice more than anything else is that people genuinely want help.  They want guidance.  They want direction.  When I hear that I realize that my life has an added new purpose.  My number one reason for getting healthy was for me and my family.  After experiencing failing the medical test and the prospect of not being on the show, it was the first time in my life I had to face my own mortality.  The thought of not being around for my family because of something I could control was just too much for me to comprehend.  I remember praying that if I was given another chance, I was going to make the best of it.  And I did.

Now with knowledge and tools, I want to pay it forward.   I want to help people in need.  Who need guidance.  Who need direction. I want to help you.

Where do you start?  There's so much to tell.  You're ready to go ! Right?

I love the excitement!  I love the enthusiasm!  I wish I could look through the computer right now and see everybody looking back saying "Ok Mike, what's next?"

Believe it or not, the next thing you need to do is take a deep breath. Close your eyes.  Deep breath in,  Deep breath out.  Deep breath in,  Deep breath out.  Regardless of whether you need to lose 5lbs or 220lbs, you need to start with a base.  This is what's going to carry you through your highs and your lows.  And believe me, you'll have both.  Obviously you don't need to lose 220lbs in 9 months.  That's a little "Extreme" !  Ha !!

You need to relax.  Yes, I said it, relax.  I know you're saying to yourself "But Mike, I have to do an hour of cardio and I have to do my resistance training and I have to do this and I have to do that !".  I don't have time to relax.  I don't have time to take deep breaths.  Yes you do.  You have to.  This is going to be the foundation for your transformation.  And guess what else you need to do?  Smile !!  It's contagious.  It makes you feel better.  So smile.  As often as you can.

The key to successful transformation is relaxing, figuring out your purpose, intention, passion.  And Smile !!

My first disclaimer.  I am not a trainer.  I am not a nutritionist.  I am not a boxer (but I play one on tv).  I'm a passionate person who has learned a lot of great lessons from people like Chris Powell, Heidi Powell and others who I will introduce as we get into different aspects of my learning experience and transformation.  Some great people who are also passionate about helping people like me and you.  Together, they worked with Chris and Heidi to help create the transformation of Mike.  But ultimately, it was Mike who was responsible for his transformation.  Just like you will be responsible for your transformation.

Let's get back to relaxing.  Whether it's meditation, self hypnosis, yoga or anything else that can help you get to a place where you can clear your mind, figure out what will be best for you.  If it's just deep breathing, do it.  Do it for at least 5 minutes a day.  You will be amazed what clarity you have when you clear your mind and think of nothing else but your success.  Your transformation begins with your visualization of your success.  See what you look like at the end of your transformation path, visualize yourself fitting into smaller clothes, being able to kill every physical challenge that comes your way.  Feel what it's like to be in the best shape of your life.  Because you deserve it.  And you have to believe you deserve it.

Take that first step.  Visualize !!!  Relax !!  You owe it to yourself.

My Letter to Chris Powell

Here it is !!  The letter I wrote to Chris Powell.  Yes, it is real.  I had a lot of people asking about it.  You will notice a lot of references to my goals that I achieved on the show.  Enjoy. 

Dear Chris,

My name is Mike Epstein and I’m a proud father of 3 just like you.  Being a dad is the most important thing in the world to me as I’m sure it is to you.  I am grateful every day that I have my children and my wife Nanci in my life.  But I feel like I've let them down because I can't be a more active person in their lives because of my physical limitations.  I've made a lot of promises that I haven't kept and I feel like I'm the boy who cried wolf.   I’m writing this letter to you because I need your help and guidance.

My kids are 9, 14 and 17.  They are all at different stages in their lives where they need different kinds of guidance.   But there is one thing they all have in common.  They don’t eat right and I see tendencies in them that I see in myself and that scares the hell out of me.  They have never seen me under 350 pounds.  Right now I’m pushing the scales at 415 and have been as high as 453.  I’ve spent their entire lives as a morbidly obese person.  Their love is unconditional but I’m sure they’ve heard things from their friends about their “fat dad”.  And I’m sure it bothers them.  They don’t deserve it.

I try to be the best father I can be.  But I want more.  I want to be an all around role model to my children.  I want them to lead healthy, happy lives.  But how can I teach them healthy living when I don’t follow it myself?   I want to teach them and watch them grow into amazing, healthy adults and help them along in their journey of life.  If I continue down the path I’ve taken I may not be around long enough to see that happen.  I want to walk my daughter down the aisle someday and meet my grandkids.  They don't deserve to lose me because of my selfishness. 

Like you, I'm a problem solver, except I work with technology to solve my problems.  The only problem I haven't been able to solve up to this point is my weight.  I'm in a losing battle and I'm afraid I don't have a lot of time left if I don't make drastic changes now!   I'm going to be 49 years old and I don't know how much time I have left on this earth.  But whatever time I do have left, I want to make it quality time and not become a burden on my family because of an obesity related disease like diabetes.

I’ve tried every weight loss method known to man.  Conventional and unconventional.  And I’ve failed with every one.  But I’m not giving up.  I'm a fighter.  A warrior.  I don't like to lose. I'm ready to give my heart and my soul to give myself a longer, healthier life.  I've never given up in my fight to lose weight and keep it off so I could be a better husband and dad.  I know what's at stake and will never give up until I find the piece of the puzzle that's missing.  I‘m hoping that missing piece of the puzzle is you and I working together to solve the problem.

 My wife and I have been married for 19 years this May 23.  Since the time I met her, I’ve gained over 200 pounds.  That’s a whole other person.  And not a small person either.  She didn’t buy into marrying 2 people.  I’m surprised she’s still with me.  I know she loves me, but I know that I’m not the person she dreamed I’d become 19 years later.  I’m not quite her Knight in Shining Armor or her Prince Charming.  She’s afraid of losing me and becoming a widow.  She lost her dad at 23 in an auto accident during a time in her life when she really needed him the most.  My wife is scared to death that my kids will be left without a father when they are young and when they need me the most.  It kills me to think about that and that’s why I never give up.  I am determined to be a better, healthier father and husband.  I want to be around for a long time and be the person I was meant to be!!!  Next year will be my 20th wedding anniversary.  One year from now, I want to renew my wedding vows at half my bodyweight and give my wife her Prince Charming back!!!  I just need help.

I lost my dad when I was 32.  He was also killed in an auto accident.  What are the odds of 2 married people losing their dads in automobile accidents? I believe that people come into your life for a reason.  Besides being the most beautiful woman in the world, my wife helped me through my grieving.  She was close to my dad and had to deal with losing 2 dads.  And how did I pay her back?  I gained 150 pounds in a very short period of time and became very distant and numb.  It got to a point where she started calling me the “Ice Man”.  I didn’t know how to deal with my emotions and turned to food for comfort.  I built a wall of fat that I have yet to break through. 

My dad died when he was 60 and his dad died when he was 60 of a heart attack.  At the rate I’m going, I won’t even make it to 60.  I don’t want to continue the Epstein curse.  I want to break it.  I want to smash it !!!  I want to get rid of my blood pressure medicine and my cholesterol medicine.  The only way to do that is to follow a healthy lifestyle.  I want to be the husband, father, friend and coworker that I was meant to be !!!  I want to help others along my journey.  A journey begins with a step and I’m ready to take that step !!

They say “When a student is ready, the teacher will come”.  I know I’m ready!!  I just need your help Chris. 

I try to enjoy every moment with my family.  I never know how long it’s going to last.

Have you ever said “I’ll Start Tomorrow”?

iPhone 5-16-13 379I wanted to start a series of blogs that really show what was going through my mind before I was selected for Extreme Weight Loss and the transformation that occurred.  These are things that I said and heard.   If you can relate to this, continue to follow the blogs as I reflect on the mental transformation which has to take place in order for the weight loss to stick and be able to face anything that life throws at you !!! Have you ever said "I'll Start Tomorrow" or any of the other things listed below ? If so, don't you think it's time to start "Today"?

“I’ll start tomorrow”

“I think I’ll wait until Monday”

“I have a big event coming up next week.  I think I’ll wait until after that”

“I hurt myself.  I can’t do any exercise.  I’ll wait until I’m better”

“I’m going to eat anything and everything tonight.  I’m starting my diet tomorrow”

“Can’t eat anything tonight.  I’m getting weighed tomorrow”

“I’d rather have a table than a booth”

“Wow, I don’t remember these booths being so tight”

“Oh jeez, the chairs have armrests.  Do they all have armrests ?”

“I don’t want to go to that restaurant.  All the chairs have armrests.”

“Can I have a seat belt extender ?”

“Can I have an aisle seat ?”

“Can I have a seat in the emergency exit row ?”

“What do you mean you booked me in a middle seat ?”

“What do you mean I have to buy another seat on this airplane ?”

 “You want to weigh me?  I don’t think so. .You have to have the extra 100lb piece you hang on between the 150lb and 200lb slots.  I know because I have this scale at home”

“I’ll just pick a little something up on the way home to hold me over until dinner”

“You have to be kidding me.  I won’t fit in that rental car.  You’ll need the jaws of life to get me out”

“No thank you.  I never eat dessert”

“Can I have skim milk with my coffee?”

“How can you be so big?  I never see you eat”

“You really look hot.  You’re sweating.  Take off your shirt.  Jump in.  The water is great. “

“Different manufacturers make their clothes smaller.  It’s really a 3X”

“We only make sizes up to 2X.  Sorry.”

“No one over 300lbs can ride this ride”

“Sorry sir, if you can’t put the bar all of the way down, you’ll have to exit the ride”

“Daddy can’t do that, his leg hurts”

“Daddy can’t do that, his back hurts”

“Daddy can’t do that, he’s too fat”

“I was stuck in the seat, when I got up, the chair got up with me..”

“We’ll have to special order that for your size”

“Should you be eating so many carbs?”

“You used to be really handsome”

“I didn’t even recognize you”

“Man, did you get fat”

“I’m just big boned”

“I’ve got a lot of muscle underneath.  It’s just an overcoat”

“Do you need help getting up?”
”You move pretty good for a big guy”

“ 2 egg Mcmuffins, 2 bottles of water ”

“Aren’t you embarrassed by the way you look ?

”You can’t feel good about yourself”

”Don’t you want to be around for your kids?”

“I’ll start tomorrow”

 “Today is the first day of the rest of my life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It is tomorrow !!!! ”
