How Do I Start My Transformation ?

It's pretty funny having people come up to me and recognizing me.  But what I notice more than anything else is that people genuinely want help.  They want guidance.  They want direction.  When I hear that I realize that my life has an added new purpose.  My number one reason for getting healthy was for me and my family.  After experiencing failing the medical test and the prospect of not being on the show, it was the first time in my life I had to face my own mortality.  The thought of not being around for my family because of something I could control was just too much for me to comprehend.  I remember praying that if I was given another chance, I was going to make the best of it.  And I did.

Now with knowledge and tools, I want to pay it forward.   I want to help people in need.  Who need guidance.  Who need direction. I want to help you.

Where do you start?  There's so much to tell.  You're ready to go ! Right?

I love the excitement!  I love the enthusiasm!  I wish I could look through the computer right now and see everybody looking back saying "Ok Mike, what's next?"

Believe it or not, the next thing you need to do is take a deep breath. Close your eyes.  Deep breath in,  Deep breath out.  Deep breath in,  Deep breath out.  Regardless of whether you need to lose 5lbs or 220lbs, you need to start with a base.  This is what's going to carry you through your highs and your lows.  And believe me, you'll have both.  Obviously you don't need to lose 220lbs in 9 months.  That's a little "Extreme" !  Ha !!

You need to relax.  Yes, I said it, relax.  I know you're saying to yourself "But Mike, I have to do an hour of cardio and I have to do my resistance training and I have to do this and I have to do that !".  I don't have time to relax.  I don't have time to take deep breaths.  Yes you do.  You have to.  This is going to be the foundation for your transformation.  And guess what else you need to do?  Smile !!  It's contagious.  It makes you feel better.  So smile.  As often as you can.

The key to successful transformation is relaxing, figuring out your purpose, intention, passion.  And Smile !!

My first disclaimer.  I am not a trainer.  I am not a nutritionist.  I am not a boxer (but I play one on tv).  I'm a passionate person who has learned a lot of great lessons from people like Chris Powell, Heidi Powell and others who I will introduce as we get into different aspects of my learning experience and transformation.  Some great people who are also passionate about helping people like me and you.  Together, they worked with Chris and Heidi to help create the transformation of Mike.  But ultimately, it was Mike who was responsible for his transformation.  Just like you will be responsible for your transformation.

Let's get back to relaxing.  Whether it's meditation, self hypnosis, yoga or anything else that can help you get to a place where you can clear your mind, figure out what will be best for you.  If it's just deep breathing, do it.  Do it for at least 5 minutes a day.  You will be amazed what clarity you have when you clear your mind and think of nothing else but your success.  Your transformation begins with your visualization of your success.  See what you look like at the end of your transformation path, visualize yourself fitting into smaller clothes, being able to kill every physical challenge that comes your way.  Feel what it's like to be in the best shape of your life.  Because you deserve it.  And you have to believe you deserve it.

Take that first step.  Visualize !!!  Relax !!  You owe it to yourself.

Have you ever said “I’ll Start Tomorrow”?

iPhone 5-16-13 379I wanted to start a series of blogs that really show what was going through my mind before I was selected for Extreme Weight Loss and the transformation that occurred.  These are things that I said and heard.   If you can relate to this, continue to follow the blogs as I reflect on the mental transformation which has to take place in order for the weight loss to stick and be able to face anything that life throws at you !!! Have you ever said "I'll Start Tomorrow" or any of the other things listed below ? If so, don't you think it's time to start "Today"?

“I’ll start tomorrow”

“I think I’ll wait until Monday”

“I have a big event coming up next week.  I think I’ll wait until after that”

“I hurt myself.  I can’t do any exercise.  I’ll wait until I’m better”

“I’m going to eat anything and everything tonight.  I’m starting my diet tomorrow”

“Can’t eat anything tonight.  I’m getting weighed tomorrow”

“I’d rather have a table than a booth”

“Wow, I don’t remember these booths being so tight”

“Oh jeez, the chairs have armrests.  Do they all have armrests ?”

“I don’t want to go to that restaurant.  All the chairs have armrests.”

“Can I have a seat belt extender ?”

“Can I have an aisle seat ?”

“Can I have a seat in the emergency exit row ?”

“What do you mean you booked me in a middle seat ?”

“What do you mean I have to buy another seat on this airplane ?”

 “You want to weigh me?  I don’t think so. .You have to have the extra 100lb piece you hang on between the 150lb and 200lb slots.  I know because I have this scale at home”

“I’ll just pick a little something up on the way home to hold me over until dinner”

“You have to be kidding me.  I won’t fit in that rental car.  You’ll need the jaws of life to get me out”

“No thank you.  I never eat dessert”

“Can I have skim milk with my coffee?”

“How can you be so big?  I never see you eat”

“You really look hot.  You’re sweating.  Take off your shirt.  Jump in.  The water is great. “

“Different manufacturers make their clothes smaller.  It’s really a 3X”

“We only make sizes up to 2X.  Sorry.”

“No one over 300lbs can ride this ride”

“Sorry sir, if you can’t put the bar all of the way down, you’ll have to exit the ride”

“Daddy can’t do that, his leg hurts”

“Daddy can’t do that, his back hurts”

“Daddy can’t do that, he’s too fat”

“I was stuck in the seat, when I got up, the chair got up with me..”

“We’ll have to special order that for your size”

“Should you be eating so many carbs?”

“You used to be really handsome”

“I didn’t even recognize you”

“Man, did you get fat”

“I’m just big boned”

“I’ve got a lot of muscle underneath.  It’s just an overcoat”

“Do you need help getting up?”
”You move pretty good for a big guy”

“ 2 egg Mcmuffins, 2 bottles of water ”

“Aren’t you embarrassed by the way you look ?

”You can’t feel good about yourself”

”Don’t you want to be around for your kids?”

“I’ll start tomorrow”

 “Today is the first day of the rest of my life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It is tomorrow !!!! ”

Welcome to Mike’s World – My First Blog Post

SONY DSCSo this is where it begins.  The date is August 14, 2013.  It's the day after my episode of Extreme Weight Loss aired on ABC.  For those of you who saw my episode, it was quite an adventure.  Some of you may call it a struggle, but I like to call it an adventure.  Because that's what it was.  A year of my life that would change me forever.  I started the year off at 417 pounds.  By the time my year was over I weighed 196 pounds.  A total weight loss of 53% and a body fat percentage of 10%.  I really lost all my weight in nine months.  A feat that had never been done before and an unheard of body fat of 10% which had also never been accomplished before.  And all of this was done when I was 49 years old.  

I had gotten myself into better shape than I was when I was playing football in college at Albright College in the 1980s.  

I just turned 50 this past April.  I celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary with my wife Nanci.  What a crazy, amazing year it's been!  I'm no longer a spectator with my children, I'm now a participant.   This is my first blog. I will be blogging on a  regular basis and introducing you to my transformation process as well as introducing you to the people who were instrumental in my success.
